Name That Exhaust Note, Episode 92: 2010 Subaru Legacy 3.6R

On Tuesday, we posted an audio recording of a mystery car?s exhaust note. To hear it again, click play above. Likely because this week?s exhaust note seemed to lack the unique sound characteristics of a flat-six engine, no one who commented figured out that it came from a 2010 Subaru Legacy 3.6R. Like that sound? [...]

Davidson denies gamesmanship

Anthony Davidson denied suggestions of gamesmanship in the 22nd hour of this year's Le Mans 24 Hours after his #9 Peugeot appeared to impede the progress of the leading #2 Audi, which was trying to lap him. Davidson insisted afterwards that he had been given no orders to hold up eventual winner Andre Lotterer, who was being pursued by the Briton's team-mate Simon Pagenaud in the sister #8 car

Webber frustrated by KERS problems

Mark Webber fears that he may be left without KERS again in the Canadian Grand Prix - after losing the power-boost for qualifying in Montreal. The Australian's efforts to secure pole position were wrecked by the 0.3-0.4 seconds deficit that he was forced to face after his KERS malfunctioned on Saturday in Canada. And although the team still has time to fix the problems ahead of Sunday's race, Webber is pessimistic about what can be done

Official: Ferrari renews deals with Marlboro, Puma

Tobacco advertising has been banned from Formula One racing for several years now, but that doesn't appear to be deterring either Ferrari or Philip Morris. The two companies have just announced a renewal of their partnership over the team officially known as Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro through 2015.

Last year, Ferrari removed the bar-code logo off its car over allegations that it was a subliminal representation of the Marlboro logo, replacing it with the new logo pictured at right. But while the Marlboro name and logo may not appear on the cars or anything else officially associated with the team, the Marlboro name - one of Philip Morris' best-known tobacco brands - is officially part of the team's name.

Speculation that the sponsorship deal could be shifted to one of Kraft's various brands drew to a close when Philip Morris was spun off in 2008, leaving only tobacco and wines under its own umbrella.

Around the same time, Ferrari has also renewed its merchandising deal with Puma. The sportswear company will continue producing branded sportswear and shoes with the Ferrari logo, as well as providing the flame-retardant suits which Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa wear on the track.

Follow the jump for the brief announcement on the former and the longer one on the latter.

Heritage Trail

With a heritage dating back to the days of the Pebble Beach road races, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is a touchstone of  American road racing.  The competitors of the inRacingNews Challenge were lucky enough to pay a visit to the mecca during 2011 Week Five for a week’s worth of online racing. Once again, Pontiac Solstice points leader Marius Golombeck and defending SpecRacer Ford champion Gabriel Tobar looked to have strong performances in order to boost their already-strong championship leads. Golombeck didn?t disappoint, scoring 166 points, most of any driver on the weekend. But despite Tobar?s usual win from the pole after leading every lap, he only finished seventh in Ford points on the week, as a number of championship rivals including Jon Moore, Henri Salminen, and Chris Hughson outscored [...]

While Mercedes-Benz has been steadily re-integrating its four-seat coupes and cabrios into their corresponding sedan ranges, BMW is reportedly preparing to go the other way. Word from Car Magazine has it that the Bavarian automaker is preparing to launch the next-generation versions of its 1 Series and 3 Series coupes and convertibles as the 2 Series and 4 Series, respectively.

The move would correspond well to the 6 Series, the coupe and convertible that sits between the 5 Series and 7 Series sedans. It's not the first time BMW has considered such a move, having come close to spinning the two-door 3 Series into a 4 Series about a decade ago.

Audi recently completed a similar shift, replacing the A4 convertible with the A5. That model has since spawned a five-door Sportback, in whose company BMW may soon find itself with the 3 Series GT that may likewise be badged as a 4 Series.

Andre Lotterer handed Audi victory in a classic Le Mans 24 Hours, taking the chequered flag less than 10s ahead of Simon Pagenaud in the nearest #9 Peugeot.
